The Cry of the Ignorant Against the GunThis is the first time, due to the DC area murders, that we at Gunblast have received so much anti-gun mail. People are just reacting to the swill that they are fed on the TV news. People are very emotional, and sometimes don't think clearly in times of tragedy such as this. In each case, the murdering bastard only took one shot, but people are complaining that the Bushmaster rifle that he used can put out so much firepower. The general public is both ignorant and scared, and want to blame someone other than the shooter. Their fear is understandable, and sometimes hard to control, but ignorance can be cured by knowledge. I believe that they just do not want to admit that they are so vulnerable to such an evil person. People confuse sickness with evil. Cancer is a sickness. Diabetes is a sickness. Serial murder is evil. Many people do not want to admit that there is true evil in the World. They would rather believe that if just this particular type or that particular type of weapon did not exist, we would all join hands and sing songs and life would be just peachy. It just ain't so. The same basic rifle that was used by the murderers was also used by the hundreds of law enforcement officers that pursued him. There is no inherent evil in the firearm, only in the cold soul of the criminal. Each of the murders committed by this cretin could have been as easily done with any rifle made within the last 200 years. He took easy shots from a cowardly position. Every day, many lives are protected by the same type of rifle that the murderer used, by both hired law enforcement and private citizens. If there is a lesson to be
learned from this series of killings, it is that the police, even when
concentrated in force as they were in the DC area, cannot protect the individual
citizen from a determined killer. People do not want to face this reality, and
so goes the outcry of the ignorant against the weapon. This is a time for the
citizenry to take up arms against evil, instead of disarming themselves to
become sheep for the slaughter. We have the best police force in the World, but
when the wolf is at the door, we are on our own. The same weapon that is used by
the evil, can be used for the good, as a wall against those who would do us
harm.
Among the emails we received today was the following, along with my response. Hopefully I did this guy some good.
Yes, the Varminter 223 certainly proved accurate, killing 10 innocent Washington area people and gravely wounding 3. Guns like this simply don't make sense. I own plenty [of guns] but the world really doesn't need a Bushmaster or any other assault rifle. What sport is it to blow away chipmunks from 100 yards? Name withheld
The Bushmaster is a fine gun indeed, but I don't think anyone has invented a gun yet that'll just get up and kill anyone all by itself. Thing is, "assault rifle" is an aesthetic. True assault rifles are full-auto or selective fire; guns like the now-famous Bushmaster are functionally no different than a Browning BAR or Ruger 10/22, they just "look mean". Also, the Second Amendment is not about hunting. I do not own, nor have I ever owned, any military-style rifles (not yet, at least - I'll probably hurry up and buy a Bushmaster while I can) because they're just not "my thing" either, but as a gun owner you must recognize this: the gun-grabbers who would use such an event to foster their political objectives will not stop with so-called "assault rifles". Their attempts to march to political victory over the bodies of the fallen WILL continue until YOU can no longer say that you "own plenty". Even the guns we might see as personally distasteful are still Constitutionally-protected; in fact, given such precedents as U.S. versus Miller (in which a man's conviction on weapons charges was upheld because his gun was seen to be NOT militarily useful), military-style rifles IN PARTICULAR should be seen as Constitutionally-protected. If you cherish your own freedoms, you should cherish the freedoms of others (even those who want to blow away chipmunks from 100 yards) because if we allow ourselves to be divided and conquered we will have no one to blame but ourselves. Or, as Benjamin Franklin more concisely phrased it, "we must all hang together, or we shall surely hang separately". Think about it: now is the time to join the NRA if you are not a member. Now is the time to carefully consider the national and historical ramifications of the choices you will make on Election Day. Boge Quinn
