Senate Votes Against Reinstating Money-Squandering Federal Gun Program

(FAIRFAX, VA)--In an overwhelming 65-33 vote, the U.S. Senate defeated an attempt by Senator Chuck Shumer (D-NY) that would have reinstated a $15 million federal gun-buyback program. The buyback program was dissolved by the Bush administration just weeks ago, citing its ineffectiveness at reducing violent crime.

"On behalf of our 4.4 million members, the National Rifle Association applauds the Senate for siding with taxpayers by officially ending the failed Andrew Cuomo gun-buyback program," said James J. Baker, executive director of NRA's Institute for Legislative Action. "Not only is there no evidence that gun-buybacks do anything to reduce violent crime, but the Cuomo-HUD program diverted much needed funds away from public housing authorities."

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), headed by [Andrew] Cuomo under the Clinton Administration, administered the federal buyback program. However, both the General Accounting Office and Cuomo's own Inspector General expressed serious doubts about the expenditure of funds on the gun turn-in program. These funds had originally been appropriated for drug elimination programs.

"This amendment was merely a smoke and mirrors effort by Shumer to implement a feel-good program that has no impact on criminal behavior with firearms. Now, this money can be spent on endeavors that will actually affect the lives of those living in public housing. NRA looks forward to working on efforts, like Project Safe Neighborhoods, that have a proven effect on reducing crime by enforcing existing laws against violent criminals," concluded Baker.
