2008 Presidential Race Political Analysis

by Greg Quinn

August 20th, 2007

The 2008 US Presidential race is in full swing.  And, swinging it is.  Whatever your political, moral, religious, or ethical stance, you can pick a politician to represent you very well.

First of all, I’m not a politician.  I’m not a political analyst.  I’m not a member of mainstream media.  I’m a hard-working businessman, fellow shooter, minister, and family man who believes that elected politicians should effectively represent those who put them in office.  I have been active in conservative politics.  Many of you recognize the honors and awards that I have received from the National Republican Congressional Commission in DC, including Tennessee Businessman of the Year (2005), Republican of the Year (2006), and recipient of the Ronald Reagan Republican Gold Medal (2006).  But, I’m like most of you.  I love God.  I love my family.  I love my country.  I’d die for any of the three.  And, like many of you, I recognize that this next Presidential election is of huge importance.  Many of the principles we hold dear are at risk if we elect the wrong person as our nation’s President.  That’s why I am taking this time to present a brief run-down of the candidates for this next Presidential election.

For the liberals, those that detest the principles of religious freedom, family values, honor, and the conservative patriotism that founded our country and that have made our nation the envy of the world, there are plenty of candidates to represent your cause.  You have Hillary Clinton, the ultra-liberal left-winger who probably is for what the majority of the Gunblast.com readers are against, and vice-versa. Want a “free” health care system that will tax you to death and still not provide quality healthcare? Hillary is your man (er, woman).  She has a career history of being a liberal and reportedly at times unethical attorney.  She moved to New York only to secure a Senate seat.  Choose Hillary, and lose your guns.  Or choose Barack Hussein Obama, even whose name evokes a representation of those who attacked our nation on 9-11.  I admit that it’s unfair to make such a connection by name only, but I honestly cannot get beyond how much Osama and Obama sound alike.  Name aside, Obama wants to push sex education down to the pre-K educational system, is anti-gun, and is pro-abortion.  Even most African-Americans that I talk with don’t trust him.  Choose John Edwards, whose coiffure and smile warm your heart while you rapidly run backward to prevent the knife (or whatever else) may penetrate your backside. Senator Edwards effectively represents what’s wrong with career politicians and crooked lawyers.  And you have a plethora of minor candidates, such as Dennis (a joke), Chris Dodd, Joe Biden, and others. Vote for any of these if you prefer the woman’s right to choose over the murder of an innocent baby.  A vote for most of the above is a big risk of losing your right to keep and bear firearms.  Vote for the leaders in this band and you certainly have a good chance of seeing the Constitution changed or ignored, conservative positions debated, family values attacked, and your wallet grow thin through increased taxes and more government imposition.

On the conservative side of the house, there are several choices, depending upon how you define conservatism.  Mitt Romney represents very well family values, conservative politics, anti-abortion, rights of taxpayers, etc.  It’s probably unfortunate that Governor Romney will not make a bigger splash, even though he did nothing during his term as Governor of Massachusetts to stem the anti-gun tide in that state.  It’s very doubtful that he could win a battle against either Hillary or Obama, even though he’d probably make a very good President.  Ron Paul is probably one of the best candidates in terms of his position on gun rights and conservative values, and he has some very strong ideas on the economy, but I don't believe he has any chance at all of receiving the Republican nomination, so he's unfortunately a non-issue. Senator John McCain is a war hero and has defended our position on the Iraq war.  He traditionally has stood for family values and smaller government intervention.  However, his long-term political positions in the Senate may have whittled away at his judgment, and my fear is that the returning of political favors may go against my Judeo-Christian ethics.  I like much about Senator McCain, but I’m not sure that the politics won’t get in the way of the manner in which he represents my conservative values.  Given another choice, I’d feel much better about a stronger, lesser influenced, more conservative person leading our nation.  Rudy Giuliani made a name in the post-911 days of New York City.  As Mayor of New York, none can argue with his strength and resolve during a terrible crisis.  He’s fairly conservative on one hand, but the areas in which we differ are major issues with me.  I don’t feel at all comfortable about his position on abortion, and in my mind, anyone who will authorize the murder of an innocent baby cannot adequately protect our country and our Constitution.  I question his position on gun control, something very dear to all Gunblast.com readers.  And, I cannot trust his family values positioning; he left his wife for another woman.  Mike Huckabee would most likely make a good President, and certainly represents most conservative values quite well.  The former Governor has a good track record.  It’s unlikely that he could win, however.  Sam Brownback of Kansas doesn’t have a chance to beat the liberals that will lead the Democratic charge.  While Duncan Hunter states some strong conservative values, he doesn’t have a chance of winning.  So, on the conservative side of the house, from those that have thrown their hat in the ring so far that have any chance at winning the Republican party nomination, it would be a run between McCain, Giuliani, Romney, and Huckabee.  The two best candidates are probably the two that have the lesser chance of winning, Romney and Huckabee.  Honestly, it's almost a shoe-in that the Republican nomination from those currently in the race will go to either McCain or Giuliani, and that's unfortunate, as they are the most Liberal of the field. The three best candidates are probably those with the lesser chance of winning: Romney, Paul, and Huckabee. I honestly do not feel that any current Republican candidate could easily defeat Clinton or Obama, and that, my friends, is a crying shame.

The bright side is that there is someone in the wings that most likely will announce his candidacy by Labor Day.  This is a candidate that could beat the Clinton-Obama liberal ticket.  He represents family values, interests of gun owners and sportsmen, conservative politics, Christian ethics, and the right of an unborn baby to life.  He’s a fellow Tennessean.  He’s a good ol’ boy.  You know him from Law and Order as a judge.  You know by now I’m talking about former Senator Fred Thompson.  Fred believes that we need to stick it out and beat the terrorists on their home turf.  Fred believes in upholding the Constitution.  Fred is a sportsman.  Fred is anti-abortion.  Fred is conservative.  He’s a no-nonsense fellow who brings to memory Ronald Reagan in his glory days.  He’s strong.  He says what he means and means what he says.  He knows the law and will fight to defend it.  Mix John Wayne with Ronald Reagan and you come up with a pretty good representation of Fred Thompson.  That’s why we are excited that we do have a chance to bring conservatism back to the White House, and Fred Thompson is it.

Gunblast.com will soon officially state our position to endorse Fred Thompson for President.  We do so because we believe he represents the values we hold dear.  And, we believe he’s the only conservative Presidential candidate that can win, defeat the liberal agenda, and lead our nation to the greatness we seem to have forgotten.

If you agree with us, then join us.  Support Fred Thompson in your neighborhood.  Give to his campaign.  Or, email us at 4fred@gunblast.com.

Thanks,

Greg Quinn
